After pro rata calculations and as the shop included a bottle of Prosecco Frizzante for €9.12. The total vouchers a shopper would receive on this weekly shop would be €25. This was deducted from the original shop total for a Dunnes Stores trolley total of €132.59.

Pro rata is a Latin term for “in proportion”. It is used to allocate value in proportion to something that can be measured or calculated. In the case of this comparison shop:

Lidl’s Irish Beef Mince (10% Fat) is a 650 gram packet for €4.19. Whereas the most comparable product in Dunnes has a weight of 700 grams for €4.99. The pro rata takes into consideration the difference in weights and calculates the price of the Dunnes Stores item as if it was a 650 grams product. This calculation shows that 650 grams of that packet in Dunnes stores cost €4.63.

The purpose of the shops is to compare the products available in both Lidl and Dunnes stores. To do this fairly, we completed both shops on the same day, 9th April 2024. With the Lidl Shop taking place in Lidl, Belgard Road and the Dunnes Stores Shop taking place in Dunnes Stores, Kilnamanagh.

Firstly, we did our shop in Lidl encompassing elements of an average family shop, for example, milk, bread, chicken fillets, beef mince & pasta.

Our next step was to go to Dunnes and find the most comparable product based off the following criteria: weight, quality, brand (private label, premium private label or branded) and price. Considering all criteria here we choose the most comparable product that Dunnes Stores had to offer on that day.
