    Fairtrade Range


    Fairtrade is an alternative approach to conventional trade which offers a better price for farmers and workers who produce global commodities, such as coffee, tea, cocoa and bananas in developing countries. We are proud to have so many Fairtrade products in our stores!


    Lidl sell 2.65 million Fairtrade Organic Bananas annually.

    Fairtrades minimum price aims to ensure that producers can cover their costs of sustainable production. It acts as safety net for farmers at times when world markets fall below a sustainable level.


    In addition to the price paid for the product, there is an additional sum of money, called the Fairtrade Premium, that farmers receive for products sold on Fairtrade terms. This money goes into a communal fund for workers and farmers to use to improve their social, economic and environmental conditions.

    Fairtrade Bananas


    At Lidl 100% of our bananas are responsibly sourced and certified to sustainability programmes. We has been working towards ambitious commitments in relation to plastic packaging reductions and increasing the recyclability of its materials. Taking this challenge in hand, our Fruit and Veg buyers, worked with our Irish banana suppliers, Global Fruit and Fresh Fruit in the Dominican Republic, to develop an innovative solution to remove the plastic packaging on 2.5 million Fairtrade Organic bananas.

    Biodegradable Packaging


    Lidl have removed all the plastic packaging from our Fairtrade, organic bananas reducing packaging for over 2.5 million bananas a year – a reduction of 10,000kgs annually. It’s the first solution of its kind in Ireland!

    We have been working with our Fairtrade growers in the Dominic Republic for 10 years. Fairtrade ensures a fair price to producers, decent working conditions, and benefits for workers, along with improved environmental practices in banana production.
